At the edge of a wide forest lived a young deer who loved the quiet hours of dawn.
Every morning the mist rested softly on the meadow, and the grass sparkled with dew. The young deer would wander into the open field while the rest of the forest was still waking.
The meadow felt peaceful and safe.
But the young deer did not realize that dawn was also the time when wolves quietly moved through the valley.
One morning an older stag watched him step into the open field.
"Why do you come here so early?" the stag asked.
The young deer replied, "Because it is calm and beautiful. Nothing dangerous ever happens at this hour."
The stag shook his head gently. "Dawn is when the forest is most unguarded. When the world is waking, both beauty and danger walk together."
The next morning the young deer stepped into the meadow again, but this time he stayed alert. His ears listened carefully. His eyes watched the tree line.
Soon he saw movement in the grass, a wolf creeping silently through the mist.
Because he was watchful, the deer leapt quickly back into the forest and escaped.
From that day forward, the young deer still loved the quiet beauty of dawn, but he never forgot to stay alert.
