In a quiet valley surrounded by tall reeds lived a young swan named Liora.
Every morning the lake where she lived was calm and clear. The water reflected the sky like a mirror, and when Liora glided across it, the surface remained peaceful.
One day while exploring the far side of the lake, she discovered a shallow pond hidden behind thick grass. The water there was darker and full of swirling mud.
Curious, Liora stepped in.
At first nothing seemed wrong. But each time she splashed her wings, the mud rose from the bottom and clouded the water. Soon the pond was thick and murky. Liora could no longer see her reflection or the stones beneath the water.
She felt uneasy.
An old heron watching nearby spoke softly.
"Little swan, why do you stay in muddy water?"
"I only stepped here for a moment," Liora replied. "But the water keeps getting darker."
The heron nodded.
"Muddy water does not clear when you stir it. It clears when you return to clean water and let it rest."
Liora slowly stepped out of the pond and walked back toward the open lake.
As she glided again across the clear water, the surface became calm and bright once more. She could see the sky, the mountains, and her reflection shining in the water.
From that day forward, whenever Liora saw muddy ponds, she remembered the peace of the clear lake and chose her waters carefully.
