Growing in Holiness

"But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

(1 Peter 1:15-16)

Holiness is formed through daily surrender, steady walking, and a willingness to be shaped over time.

Parable: The Polished Stone

Illustration for the parable The Polished Stone

There was a man who carried a rough stone in his pocket.

Each day, as he walked, the stone rubbed against his clothes and his skin. At first, its edges were sharp and uncomfortable, and he thought about throwing it away. But he kept it, noticing that with time and movement, the stone began to change. The sharp corners softened. The surface grew smooth.

The stone was not polished in a single moment, nor by force, but by steady contact and daily wear. What once felt rough became something refined and beautiful.

The man realized that the journey itself had shaped the stone.

Moral:
Holiness is not formed in an instant, but through daily surrender, steady walking, and a willingness to be shaped over time.

Introduction: The Pursuit of Holiness

Holiness is not an unattainable standard; it is a journey of daily growth and transformation. As believers, we are called to reflect God's holiness in every area of our lives, including our thoughts, actions, and habits. This chapter focuses on what it means to grow in holiness, how to cultivate habits that align with God's will, and how to persevere in purity and righteousness.

1. Understanding Holiness

"Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord."
(Hebrews 12:14)

Reflection Questions

  1. What does holiness mean to you?
  2. How can you reflect God's character in your daily life?
  3. Are there areas of your life that need to be set apart for God?

2. Practical Steps to Grow in Holiness

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
(Psalm 119:105)
"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure... think about such things."
(Philippians 4:8)

  3. How can you use your time and talents to serve others?

4. Overcoming Obstacles to Holiness

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to purify us from all unrighteousness."
(1 John 1:9)

Do This Now

List two or three obstacles you face in your pursuit of holiness and write one action step for overcoming each.

5. Persevering in the Pursuit of Holiness

"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
(Hebrews 12:1-2)
"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose."
(Philippians 2:13)

  2. What small victories can you celebrate today?
  3. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to guide your growth?

6. Living a Life Set Apart

Growing in holiness is a lifelong journey of aligning your life with God's will. It requires intentionality, perseverance, and reliance on His grace. By choosing holiness each day, you not only reflect God's character but also experience the fullness of life He designed for you.

"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
(1 Corinthians 10:31)

Parable: The River Stone and the Patient Tortoise

Beside a flowing mountain river lived a patient old tortoise.

Every morning he walked slowly along the riverbank. One day he noticed a small rough stone resting in the shallow water. Its edges were jagged, and the rushing current pushed against it constantly.

The young animals of the forest laughed when they saw it.

"That stone will never change," said a fox. "It is too rough."

But the tortoise visited the stone every day.

Week after week the river moved over it. The water rolled it gently against the sand and other stones. Slowly, almost too slowly to notice, the sharp edges began to soften.

One morning the tortoise returned and saw that the once jagged stone had become smooth and shining under the sunlight.

A young rabbit nearby asked, "How did the stone become so beautiful?"

The tortoise smiled.

"The river did not shape it in a single day," he said. "It was shaped by steady movement, patience, and time."

The rabbit looked again at the shining stone and understood.

Great change often happens quietly.

Moral:
Holiness is formed slowly through daily surrender, steady steps, and a heart willing to be shaped over time.

Prayer for Chapter 25

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling me to live a life of holiness. I know that I cannot do this on my own, but through Your strength and grace, I can grow to reflect Your character. Help me to surrender my thoughts, habits, and desires to You daily. Guide me to build habits that honor You and to persevere even when the journey feels hard. Thank You for Your patience and for working in me to make me more like Jesus. In His name, I pray. Amen.
