When You Feel Numb: Overcoming the Absence of Remorse

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

(Psalm 51:10)

Numbness does not mean the light is gone. It means the heart needs warmth again.

Parable: The Sleeping Hedgehog and the Winter Sun

Illustration for the parable The Sleeping Hedgehog and the Winter Sun

Deep in a quiet forest lived a small hedgehog who had built his home beneath a fallen tree.

When winter came, the forest grew cold and silent. Snow covered the ground, and the hedgehog curled tightly into a ball, sleeping through the long nights.

At first, when the morning sun touched the forest, the hedgehog would stir. The warmth reached him even beneath the snow.

But as the days passed, the cold grew thicker around his den. The hedgehog no longer noticed the sunlight above. The warmth was still there, but he had grown numb to it.

One morning, a gentle deer walked by and brushed the snow away from the fallen tree. A small beam of sunlight slipped through the branches and touched the hedgehog's nose.

Slowly, the hedgehog opened one eye.

The warmth had never disappeared.

He had simply been buried beneath the cold for too long.

Little by little, he stretched his legs, stepped outside, and felt the sunlight again.

And with each day in the light, the numbness faded.

Moral:
Even when the heart grows numb, the warmth of truth and light can awaken it again.

Introduction: The Danger of Numbness

One of the most dangerous places to be spiritually is when sin no longer stirs conviction, and you feel no remorse for actions like masturbation or consuming explicit content. This numbness often stems from repeated exposure to sin, hardening your heart to its consequences. However, God's grace and mercy remain, and He can reignite sensitivity in your heart to what is good, pure, and holy. In this chapter, we will explore how to recognize and address spiritual numbness, steps to break free, and how to invite God to renew your heart.

1. Understanding Spiritual Numbness

"They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts."
(Ephesians 4:18)

Reflection Questions

  1. Do you notice areas in your life where you have grown indifferent to sin?
  2. How does spiritual numbness affect your relationship with God?
  3. What moments in your life have caused your heart to feel hardened?

2. Recognizing the Consequences of Numbness

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
(Romans 12:2)

3. How to Break Free from Numbness

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."
(Ezekiel 36:26)

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you willing to ask God to renew your sensitivity to sin?
  2. How can you create space in your life to hear God's voice more clearly?
  3. Who can you reach out to for support and encouragement in your journey?

4. Rebuilding Sensitivity to Sin

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
(Psalm 139:23-24)

(Lamentations 3:22-23)

6. Moving Toward Growth and Holiness

"Come near to God and He will come near to you."
(James 4:8)

Heavenly Father,
