Chapter 9: Practical Steps Toward Purity
“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to Your word.”
— Psalm 119:9
Practical, actionable steps to stay on the path of purity.
There was once a young man who lived near a wide field that led to a beautiful hilltop chapel. Each day he told himself, “I want to be there,” but he never chose a clear route. Sometimes he walked at night. Sometimes he wandered without direction. And more than once, he found himself standing at the edge of a swampy patch where the ground looked safe—until it wasn’t.
One evening, an older shepherd saw him covered in mud and said, “You keep trying to arrive at a holy place with unholy steps.”
The young man frowned. “I’m trying. I just keep slipping.”
The shepherd nodded and handed him three things: a map, a lantern, and a whistle.
“The map is your plan,” the shepherd said. “It shows you where not to walk and where to go instead.”
“The lantern is the Word of God. It doesn’t remove the darkness, but it shows the next right step.”
“And the whistle,” he smiled, “is what you use when you feel yourself drifting. One sound, and help comes running.”
The young man began to walk again—this time with boundaries, light, and support. He still felt the pull of old paths, but now he recognized them early. When the mud called his name, he checked the map. When shadows pressed in, he raised the lantern. And when he felt weak, he blew the whistle and someone answered.
Over time, the path became clearer—not because the field changed, but because he did.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling me to a life of purity. I know I cannot do this on my own, so I ask for Your strength and guidance. Help me to set boundaries, meditate on Your Word, and surround myself with godly influences. When I face temptation, remind me of Your faithfulness and provide a way out. Fill my heart with gratitude and my mind with thoughts that honor You. Thank You for loving me and for giving me the tools to live a life that pleases You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
